GreenRoom is a licensed and insured design build firm that was started in 2010 with the intention of making outdoor spaces in Washington, DC more functional and attractive. With the rebirth of structures across the city, outdoor spaces are too often thought of as merely parking spaces or suburban expanses of lawn and boring shrubs.
Outdoor urban spaces need to serve a number of purposes frequently in a small amount of square footage. GreenRoom works closely with the client to meet their goals for their outdoor space throughout the design and construction phases.
PROCESS
GreenRoom is a small business and prides itself on it’s size to work with the client as much as desired to ensure what’s decided on paper is translated to what gets built.
Through an initial meeting, the client expresses their vision for what they need in their outdoor space. A plan view layout is generated from this meeting with an estimate detailing materials and labor for each facet of the project. Being that there is no right answer when it comes to design, GreenRoom is able to change the initial layout as the client sees fit. When it comes time for construction, GreenRoom likes to take care of one project at a time to minimize disruption. Owner, Bryan is onsite daily to ensure implementation of the agreed upon final design.
SUSTAINABILITY
GreenRoom is a registered contractor through the District Department of the Environment’s RiverSmart program. Specifically they work to remove impervious surfaces across the city to ensure rain water is kept on site to minimize the amount of runoff that goes into the city’s sewer system.
GreenRoom uses sustainable construction methods wherever possible. All concrete and hardscape surfaces being removed are taken to a concrete recycling center where they are ground into gravel. Soil being hauled away is taken to a reuse center where most of it is given away for construction projects where fill dirt is needed. Nearly all wood and other construction debris is hauled to a premier waste to energy facility in Lorton, VA
Pervious pavers are highly encouraged as are as many local materials and native plantings as possible. GreenRoom always encourages their client’s to have as much green space as allowable in the final design.
